IPE 212: LEGAL ETHICS

10 weeks - study time 2 - 3 hours per week

The ten week course is designed to introduce students to the central ethical issues in law. Topics and tasks include (may be subject to change):

  • What is the purpose of the law?
  • What is a good legal practitioner?
  • What are the sources of law?
  • Advocacy
  • Relationships and boundaries
  • Defending guilty clients
  • Private interest and the public interest
  • Best interests in law
  • Truth telling
  • Confidentiality
  • Minority groups
  • Student chosen topics

Who can study this course?

This course is suitable for any professional or future professional (including school students where appropriate); either as an independent learner, as part of a professional cohort, as a way to complement university study, or as a part of a portfolio for continuing professional development.

There is no requirement to be a qualified legal practitioner though legal practitioners are strongly encouraged to enrol. Courses exclusively for practitioners are available by arrangement.

2 - 3 hours per week is adequate, but many students will wish to spend more time than this and will benefit accordingly.

Assessment is made according to:

  • Level of constructive engagement in the course community
  • Number and quality of ethical issues posted using the thinking tools
  • Use of the Dashboard challenge
  • Quality of a 3,000 word essay
